Independent Living Skills Program
Youth who are turning 18 and leaving foster care, experience serious problems trying to make it on their own. Many become homeless, sick, pregnant and/or in jail.
Folsom Lake College "Independent Living Skills Program" offers training to eligible youth .
Our goal in the "Independent Living Skills Program" is to enable youth to achieve self-sufficiency prior to emancipation.
We provide training and individualized services to assist each youth in achieving their goals.
After an "Independent Living Skills Assessment", each youth participates in developing their own written "Transitional Independent Living Plan".
 Assessment of basic skills
 Orientation to college
 Campus tour
 Job finding skills - resumes, interviews, etc.
 How to keep a job
 Financial Budgeting, Checking & Savings Accounts
 Renting an apartment
 Choosing a roommate
 Health Issues First Aid, CPR, Nutrition, Family Planning and STD's Education.
 Financial aid-college
 Leadership - speech & communication
 Armed Services - CCC-Americorp
 Community services available to youth: Medi-Cal, Welfare, TANF, Mental Health, ROP, Parenting classes, WIC, Cal-learn, Transportation, etc.
 Individualized academic, vocational and health counseling and referrals.
 Computer skills
 Each participant receives a file box, they are required to collect personal information, build and maintain their own records.
